If someone has poor speech foundation and ability, and signing is the only recourse, then using sign language is THE practical option to begin with. If the men who claim to love them are unwilling to learn sign language for them, then these are the quacks. Don't trust them with love. If they can't make an effort to communicate better with someone they claim to love, then I say, "Next!". From personal observation and second hand accounts (through the media), it does seem that women are the ones who tend to sacrifice more for love. It's not solely about practicality. In this case, what I see is that the writer is saying for deaf women who sign, they tend to use it as their 'first language' ie. the classic case of the deaf person who has poor speech, grew up in deaf schools and uses sign language as primary means of communication. So in such cases, it's much more difficult for the woman to pick up speech and learn to hear/listen again. In contrast, it's much easier for a hearing person to pick up sign language. I also think it's true (though I can't present any positive evidence) that hearing women will be more willing to pick up sign for their deaf siginificant others than hearing men. :P That’s a generalisation, true.

There's nothing wrong with a deaf gal going for speech therapy and working hard at listening so that she can interact better with her BF/husband, because by doing so, she can communicate better with others too. Again for a gal that learns sign-language for her deaf BF/husband, nothing wrong with that if the BF/husband is most comfortable using sign language for daily living. It really depends on what's practical, if you ask me. It's like inter-racial marriages. If you marry a Japanese, will you learn Japanese, or should she learn English/Mandarin/dialects? If you live largely in a Japanese-speaking environment, I think it will make sense for you to learn Japanese; on the other hand, if you both live in Singapore, then she's better off learning English and Mandarin.
